The Howard Assembly Room from Opera North, in collaboration with the Instituto Cervantes in Leeds, will offer a special screening of Pedro Almodóvar’s 2006 comedy-drama Volver (Spanish for ‘to go back’ or ‘return’) with a short flamenco guitar performance before the film.

The performance will be offered by flamenco guitarist Tom Metcalfe, who will play a set of songs inspired in the soundtrack of this film by the recognised director from La Mancha.

Centring on an eccentric family of women from a windswept region south of Madrid, Penélope Cruz stars in Volver as Raimunda, a working-class woman forced to go to great lengths to protect her 14-year-old daughter Paula. To top off the family crisis, her mother Irene returns from the dead to tie up loose ends.

As well as being nominated at the BAFTAs, Golden Globes and Academy Awards, the film came away with the title of Best Screenplay at the 59th Cannes Film Festival as well as Best Actress – which was shared by the six stars of the film.
