The Colony
Beyond the cast based on the European star-system of the two protagonists of this disturbing plot, Emma Watson and Daniel Brühl, The Colony astonishes by going to the horror behind the religious or sectarian communities that populate all of Latin America. This theme, which has been treated in other films such as El club (Pablo Larraín, 2015) or Quizás es cierto lo que dicen de nosotras (Camilo Becerra and Sofía Paloma Gómez, 2023), focuses in this case on one of these spaces of repression and terror, contemporary to the Chilean dictatorship.
Synopsis: During the Chilean coup of 1973, the masses take to the streets to protest against the general Pinochet. Among them, Daniel and Lena, a young couple who, like many others, are arrested by the secret police. Soon after, Daniel finds himself trapped in a secret holding camp located underground, beneath the infamous Dignity Colony, a German sect that follows the leadership of the notorious Paul Schäfer. The school presents itself as a charitable mission, but in reality it is a place from which no one ever escaped. Desperate to rescue her boyfriend, Lena joins the mysterious cult in hopes of finding Daniel and fleeing.
