La vaquilla (The Heifer)

The story on the front of the Spanish Civil War of the attempted robbery of a heifer by the Republican soldiers from a town taken over by the rebels is a true, too human, satire on the war. In a time when cinema retaked the war and the postwar period —when it was a must for the historical memory and the necessary relief of society after almost half a century of dictatorship—, Berlanga and Azcona propose a corrosive look towards the conflict, presenting the fight for life through a vicissitude that, in its lack of epic, defines the great humanity of the poor soldiers, oblivious to the horror and nonsense of war.
