Galician-Irish Literature: Discussion and Poetry Reading

Get to know the richness of the Galician language and literature, as well as its connection with Irish poetry, through a two-part event. In the first part, Galician experts Xavier Queipo and Dolores Vilavedra, moderated by Dr. Catherine Barbour (Trinity College Dublin), will offer us a glimpse into current Galician literature. In the second part, we will hear the poems in the voices of their creators, with guests Alba Cid and Daniel Salgado, from Galicia, and Keith Payne and Grace Wells, poets connected with Galicia and Ireland, with Galician poet Martín Veiga (University College Cork) as master of ceremonies.

Artists biographies

Xavier Queipo is a poet, essayist, and author of children's and young adult literature. As a translator, he co-translated Ulysses, which received the National Translation Prize from the Spanish Ministry of Culture in 2014. 

Dolores Vilavedra holds a PhD from the University of Santiago de Compostela and is a professor of Galician Literature. She directs the literary criticism section of the journal Grial

Dr. Catherine Barbour is Head of the Department of Hispanic Studies at Trinity College, Dublin. Catherine specializes in contemporary Iberian literary and cultural studies, with a special interest in Galician studies and gender studies. 

Alba Cid (Ourense, 1989) is a Galician poet and researcher. Atlas (Galaxia, 2019), her first collection of poems, was awarded the "Miguel Hernández" National Prize for Young Poetry, granted by the Ministry of Culture. 

Daniel Salgado (Monterroso, 1981) works as a journalist. His latest book is Poemas realistas (Apiario, 2024). The poet Miriam Reyes has translated his poems into Spanish in Huelaga General. Antología poética (2018). 

Martín Veiga is a poet, translator, and senior lecturer at University College Cork, where he also directs the Irish Centre for Galician Studies. He has published six individual poetry books in Galician. 

Grace Wells is an award-winning eco-poet and environmental writer. Grace has published three books of poetry with Dedalus Press, most recently in 2022, The Church of the Love of the World. In 2022, she was awarded the Aodh Ruadh Ó Domhnaill Residency in A Coruña. 

Keith Payne is the author of ten collections of poetry in translation and original poetry, most recently Building the Boat (Badly Made Books, 2023. Whales and Whales, from the Galician of Luisa Castro, was published in 2024.
