Atapuerca: the Mystery of Human Evolution
Javier TruebaAfter years of intense work, the tenacity of a scientific team starts to unveil the secrets of an obscure period of human evolution until very recently. Due to the lack of fossils, the evolution of the human species in the last million years is still a mystery. But, 300.000 years ago a group of 33 men and women found their death in unknown circumstances. Their remains were buried in the deepest end in a cave of the Atapuerca Mountains, in northern Spain. There, in a place called Sima de los Huesos (Pit of Bones), is the biggest accumulation of human fossils ever found, as well as the oldest human fossils found in the European continent at least 780.000 years old.
