Rendezvous with Cinema. Virtual Club 2024 Instituto Cervantes

The virtual cinema club «Rendezvous with Cinema» dedicates its October session to the film To the women of Spain. Maria Lejarraga, by Laura Hojman, a Sevillian filmmaker who has dedicated her two previous films to two great figures of Spanis literature, Rubén Darío and Antonio Machado.

This documentary, nominated for the three major national film awards (the Feroz, the Forqué and the Goya), is a delicate work on recovering historical memory. It is not only a tribute to the writer and pioneer of feminism in Spain, but it is also the chronicle of a historical moment led by a group of brilliant and brave women who wanted to build a better future and whose dreams of progress were shattered when the Spanish Civil War broke out.

Synopsis: The works of María Lejárraga (1874-1974) were published under the name of her husband, the theater entrepreneur Gregorio Martínez Sierra. The most prolific Spanish playwright of all time, author of works such as Cradle Song (made into a film five times) or the libretto of El amor brujo by Falla, was a deputy in the Second Spanish Republic, as well as the founder of pioneering projects for women's rights and freedoms.

Cervantes Institute's staff moderates the activity. The meetings, which take place in a live chat, involve specialists in the film industry (filmmakers, screenwriters, etc.). Enjoy movies in Spanish!
