The Executioner
The virtual film club "Cita con el cine" closes its 2025 program with one of the masterpieces of classic Spanish cinema, "El verdugo" (The Executioner), directed by the award-winning director Luis García Berlanga. In this 1963 black comedy, Berlanga challenges the spanish society with his typical irony, criticizing situations of the time with a touch of humour.
Synopsis
José Luis is a young employee at a funeral home who, while providing a service at a prison, meets an executioner named Amadeo, who is about to retire. Upon returning the briefcase with the professional instruments he had forgotten to his home, he also meets his daughter Carmen, whom no one has wanted to marry for fear of being related to the father. The couple quickly gets along, and after being caught by the old man in a compromising situation with his daughter, José Luis is forced to marry her.
The activity is moderated by Instituto Cervantes staff and features the participation of specialists linked to the film's production (filmmakers, screenwriters...). Enjoy cinema in Spanish!
