A Reading and Conversation with Pergentino José Pergentino José

Join us for a reading and conversation with Oaxacan author Pergentino José was born in 1981 in Buena Vista, San Agustin Loxicha, a village in the Pacific highlands of Oaxaca. He earned his Master’s Degree in Hispanic Literature at Universidad Austral in Chile. He has published poetry and prose in both Zapotec and Spanish and is a member of the Sistema Nacional de Creadores de Arte, the Mexican government's prestigious fellowship program for artists and writers. His poetry was awarded with the CaSa Award organized by the government of Oaxaca. Red Ants (Deep Vellum, 2020) is his first book in English (translated by Thomas Bunstead), and the first literary translation into English from the Zapotec Sierra. Moderated by Prof. Héctor García Chávez, Director of Graduate Programs in Gender Studies, Loyola University Chicago.
