Cita con el cine: «Bidasoa, 2018-2023»
The second session of this year's virtual film club "Cita con el cine" is dedicated to the documentary "Bidasoa, 2018-2023" directed by singer, producer, and now film director Fermín Muguruza. The film, which combines animation with spoken word, narrates the heartbreaking story hidden by the Bidasoa River, a painful testament to the dormant voices of migrants who tried to seek a dignified life elsewhere and were unable to do so.
Synopsis
In the summer of 2018, France imposed stricter police controls and closed several crossing points along the natural Pyrenean-Atlantic border of the Bidasoa River to prevent immigrants from transiting to other European countries. These measures led to ten deaths within a year. Specifically, since April 2021, seven people drowned in the Bidasoa River between Irun and Hendaye, and three others were killed by a train in Ziburu in October 2021. [Source: ICAA database].
