Welcome, Mr. Marshall! (Luis García Berlanga, 1953)

Welcome, Mr. Marshall! (Luis García Berlanga, 1953) closes the Great Spanish Film Comedies series with one of the most iconic classics of Spanish cinema and one of its most insightful satires. Set in a small Castilian village, the film follows the hopes and expectations of its inhabitants as they prepare for the visit of an American delegation, whom they aim to impress in the hope of receiving financial aid. Through sharp and ironic humour, Luis García Berlanga offers a critical portrayal of Spain at the time, addressing themes such as inequality, collective aspirations and foreign influence. Blending local colour with innovative storytelling, the film is both entertaining and rich in symbolic meaning. The screening will take place on 24 September and will be presented in Spanish with English subtitles.
In this classic comedy, humour becomes a vehicle for social critique that remains strikingly relevant, establishing the film as a key work in European cinema and in the career of its director.
