Esteban Vicente. The Painter of Reality
Esteban VicenteFrom October 2, 2026, to January 9, 2027, the Instituto Cervantes New York, in collaboration with The Harriet and Esteban Vicente Foundation and the Esteban Vicente Museum, will present the exhibition Esteban Vicente: The Painter of Reality.
Esteban Vicente (Turégano, 1903 – New York, 2001) represents one of the most fascinating bridges between the European pictorial tradition and the American avant-garde of the twentieth century. In 1936, coinciding with the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, the artist decided to relocate to the United States, where he would spend the remainder of his life. Over the course of more than sixty years, Vicente became fully integrated into the American Abstract Expressionist movement, forging close professional and personal relationships with its leading figures while earning the respect of the era’s most influential critics and gallery owners. Drawing on his background as a Spanish artist trained in cultural capitals such as Paris and London, he absorbed the most progressive artistic currents of his time, producing a distinctive body of work that today constitutes an essential part of both American artistic heritage and contemporary Spanish art.
Under the title Esteban Vicente: The Painter of Reality, the exhibition explores the artist’s philosophy, which he described in 1968 as being grounded in a profound sense of reality, far removed from the extravagant and the artificial. For Vicente, this quality, present in the literature of Cervantes and the paintings of Zurbarán, translated into an artistic practice that prioritized the sensual nature of painting, the necessity of structural order as the foundation of creation, and an austere use of materials. True to these principles, the exhibition brings together thirty-three works created between 1950 and 1997, on loan from the Esteban Vicente Museum of Contemporary Art in Segovia. Organized in collaboration with the Segovia museum and with the support of The Harriet and Esteban Vicente Foundation, this exhibition offers a unique opportunity to rediscover the essential vision of a master who transformed color and form into his own reality.
