Hispanic Short Stories: From Gabriela Mistral to Mario Benedetti

Hispanic Short Stories: From Gabriela Mistral to Mario Benedetti

In this En español session, we will explore some of the most outstanding stories and voices in 20th-century Hispanic American literature. Through texts by Gabriela Mistral, Juan Rulfo, Adolfo Bioy Casares, Julio Cortázar, Augusto Monterroso, and Mario Benedetti, we will examine different ways of understanding the short story genre: from prose poetry and rural realism to the fantastic, humour, narrative experimentation, and social critique.
Participants will discuss selected excerpts and share their reflections on universal themes such as love, memory, identity, death, imagination, and human relationships. No prior knowledge of literature is required, only curiosity and a willingness to converse in Spanish.
